SEAFREIGHT – THE FACTS

Seafreight is currently responsible for around 80% of global trade. Globalisation and the removal of barriers in the world market mean that overall, worldwide shipping is continuing to grow. Goods are increasingly imported and exported. In addition, imports and exports mean that more and more companies have production and commercial sites overseas.

In comparison to overland transport – provided this is possible to the desired destination – shipping is usually also more cost-effective. Consequently the cost factor for transport by ship is often very significant.

Seafreight – How Does It Work in Practice?

The seaports are the so-called transport hubs where the land transport carriers meet the ships. Here the freight changes from one transport carrier to another on special shipping equipment. To ensure the problem-free inflow and removal of goods, rail tracks, major roads and inland waterways lead to the ports. For this reason, extra large container terminals are also a feature of very busy ports.

In addition, every transport obviously must be sufficiently documented and approved. For example, export papers, transit documents, consignment notes and much more are required before the goods are loaded onto a ship prior to sailing. Aside from this, in many cases there is the option for transporting goods as part loads with liner services. However, the desired port is not always served by the relevant line – particularly in the case of unusual destinations. In such a case, proper experts who can provide well-engineered solutions are required.
